Work Plan 2016-18

Program Title: IPTP – International Pediatrician Training Program

Concept: The basic concept of the IPTP is to encourage promising young medical doctors, pediatricians, from member countries of the Asia Pacific Pediatric Association (APPA)to study in Japan. The exchange of ideas will also contribute to a shared understanding of appropriate standards for pediatric care in Asia Pacific. It is also the intention of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to introduce programs similar to this in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

Details: The details of the proposed IPTP system are as follows:

  1. The Japan Pediatrics Society (JPS) will welcome two trainees in the area of pediatrics research for a short duration (about three months) from Asia Pacific countries every year.
  2. The representative of each country which wishes to apply will notify APPA with the name of an applicant and the theme of research.
  3. APPA will send the list of applicants to JPS.
  4. JPS will select two research trainees from all candidates and provide them with travel expense (a round-trip economy class airplane ticket) and financial assistance for expenses incurred during the stay; however financial assistance may not cover the full amount.
  5. The trainees will be expected to participate in a regular exchange of ideas with JPS.
  6. Each trainee will be required to present a report about what he/she has learned, and how he/sheexpects toapplythe knowledge in a practical way in his/her own country.

Timeline: A visual timeline of the IPTP process is as follows:

Announcement of IPTP program Application Deadline and Selection Process by JPS Notification of Selection and Acceptance by Prospective Trainees Trainees Prepare and Come to Japan Training Period
3 months before application deadline 2 months 2 months To Be Decided 3 months

Conclusion: The Technical Advisory Group has been working to raise the level of pediatrics around the globe. To further this cause, the Technical Advisory Group proposed a system of international training for pediatricians (IPTP in this Work Plan) at the APPA conference held in India this January. This Work Plan outlines the idea of the JPS for implementation of this program. We also wish to introduce similar programs in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, and ask APPA and the respective countries for their consideration in doing this. We are confident this IPTPsystem will help Asia Pacificpediatricians foster new skills and ideas that will advance the level of pediatric care in Asia Pacific, shining a brighter light on hope to save the lives of children in every part of the world.
